Professional Background

Steven R. Scanlan, M.D. is board certified in general psychiatry and addiction medicine (ASAM) and practices in Boca Raton, Florida.  He specializes in office based detoxification from alcohol, opiates (heroin, methadone, vicodin, oxycontin, percocet, fentanyl, etc.), and other substances.  Dr. Scanlan has performed over one thousand opiate detoxifications using subutex and suboxone to treat opiate addiction.  His is also a Certified Suboxone Provider. His professional interests include relapse prevention, dual diagnosis treatment (for example, patients with both bipolar disorder and heroin addiction), and psychopharmacology, which is the study of drug-induced changes in mood, sensation, thinking, and behavior.

Education

Dr. Scanlan graduated cum laude in zoology from the University of Miami in Oxford, Ohio with a minor in chemistry.  He received his medical degree from Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, graduating in the top third of his class and earning honors in psychiatry.  Dr. Scanlan completed his internship in internal medicine at the University of South Florida in Tampa and also completed six additional months training in anesthesiology and critical care medicine, giving him experience in caring for and managing medically challenging patients.

His residency training in psychiatry was completed at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital, which is renowned for having the busiest psychiatric emergency room in the United States.  His other work experience includes serving as an attending physician at one of the largest inpatient detox and rehab facilities in the United States, where he worked with patients from their first day of detox up through their first year in recovery.

He is active in the American Board Of Psychiatry and Neurology, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Medical Association, and the American Society of Addiction Medicine. 

Personal Background

His personal interests include spending time with his wife and two young sons, running, playing tennis, watching football, reading, being active in the recovery community, and working the twelve steps in his own life on a daily basis.  Dr. Scanlan takes a personal interest in helping set up a solid recovery plan for all of his patients that goes beyond the detoxification process.  He believes that if he can help a patient overcome the physical obsession of the disease of addiction, then the patient can start the work of treating the mental, social, and spiritual consequences of the disease.
